Sharon Booma

“I am an intuitive painter whose instincts are to make rational and objective choices, therefore I work rigorously to remain open to the element of controlled chance. Sometimes painting wet on wet, or wet on dry, experimenting with different products, I paint in layers, often painting repeatedly, but you can still see glimpses of the underlying surface. Because the paint can be put down in any order to make it dry fast or slow, shiny or matte, opaque or transparent, there is quite an expressive range of results. Many times I am inspired or fascinated by surfaces of things long neglected or discarded, by old windows and doors, their history long forgotten. I interpret its story and translate or transform that visual experience through paint. To elevate the forgotten, to tell their tale, can also be thought about in human terms, so in that sense, my paintings have a spiritual nature to them. Painting, for me, is a journey from the conscious to the unconscious, from the physical world to the world of dreams.
No matter how much you know about painting, you can never absorb or understand its impact completely. So, I am continuously learning. There is always something more to discover or express, and even now, I feel there are limitless possibilities to explore.”
