The exhibition ‘Food for Thought’ features a series of oil-on-canvas paintings by the artist, Bruce Thurman. This exhibition takes the form of an ‘illustrated cookbook’, carrying viewers on a journey of exploration through the variety of recipes found across Europe. Its purpose is to showcase Europe’s rich and various food cultures, on the one hand, and to explore the diversity and similarity found in European food culture, on the other. Seen through the eyes of the artist, the ‘Food for Thought’ series of paintings constitutes “a personal voyage through the different cultures of Europe using food as its lens”. “The way people prepare their food is perhaps the most immediate and direct expression of their culture – basic and elaborate, colourful and tactile, sensual and textured – it is, in short, everything that an artist craves when searching for a subject of interest. For me, the challenge of expressing on canvas was just too thrilling to pass up”, says Bruce Thurman.
